Prayer for Today, Sunday, October 31

O God,

As our children dress up in costumes and “Trick or Treat” this evening on All Hallows Eve, may we pause to reflect on the lives and influence of all the saints who have gone before us. There have been so many who have impacted us, some whose names we know and others who are nameless to us. These saints exhibited love, patience, sacrifice and devotion. May we celebrate their legacy and may we consider the Christian legacy we will leave for future generations. Strengthen us, we pray, so that we might meet the challenges and opportunities of this day and all days. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.
________________________________________________________________

Tonight we will host “Trunk or Treat” on the Broadway Avenue side of the church. Members will decorate their car trunks and hand out candy. There will be food and games. Invite your neighbors and friends.

Next Sunday University Place Christian Church is hosting a CROP walk for hunger. A number of our young adults and youth will participate. There will be a place to leave a donation at “Trunk or Treat” or one can be made in the offering plate.

Next Saturday and Sunday we will host another Market of Blessings. A number of worthwhile causes will be represented and there will be numerous opportunities to purchase alternative Christmas gifts.

Please continue to pray for Joan Petersen, Wanda Gungoll, Richard Cook, Carrol Miller, and Twyla Tefft.

Please keep those Pony Express saddlebags moving. See you in church.

Grace and peace,

John McLemore

Prayer for Today, Saturday, October 30

O Love That Will Not Let Us Go,

You have created us with an empty space that only you can fill, O God. Even when we feel unworthy, even when we believe our sin is too great, your grace flows over us, filling every space and place within us, and we are set free. All that we have to do is to repent and turn into your embrace. Please forgive us. Come into our hearts now, we pray, and fill us. We are expectant and ready. In Jesus name, AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Friday, October 29

O God our God,

We come to you with grateful hearts, thanking you for the beauty of this day. The cool, fall weather invigorates us. On days like today it is easy to sing your praises. There are those times, however, that are dark and dreary and our words of thanksgiving do not come easily. Forgive us for being so self absorbed. Forgive us for thinking your worthiness to be praised is dependent on the way we feel or the kind of day we are having. You are our God and we praise your name in sunlight and in darkness, because you are, indeed, our God. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

Anna Coffman had surgery yesterday. Please pray for Anna.

Maribel Moore will likely be coming home from the Heart hospital today. Please pray for a good recovery.

We will put everything together and the ‘Trunk or Treat” event will use what is left after tonight, which I am sure will be ample.

John McLemore

Prayer for Today, Thursday, October 28

O Divine Presence,

You are a mystery to us, yet we are assured of your love. Any description of you is limited by our ability to understand, yet we trust in you. Open our eyes, we pray, that we might see visions of your truth. Illumine us, O God, so the dark corners of our lives may be filled with your Spirit. We are undeserving, yet you still beckon us. May we turn into your faithful, generous, grace-filled embrace. In Jesus name we pray. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Tuesday, October 26

You are there, O God, in the secret, quiet places of our lives. Sometimes the thought of your presence frightens us because you know us so completely. We are ashamed and feel unworthy. Prayer for Today, Monday,October 25

O Loving God,

There are times in our lives when everything seems upside down and we are disoriented, not knowing what to do or where to turn. There are times when our faith seems weak and inadequate. Help us to understand, O God, that the strength of your love in not diminished by the weakness of our faith. In the turmoil of life may we focus on the Polar Star that is Jesus the Christ which will help us navigate through the storms and difficulties. We pray you will calm the seas. We pray we regain our bearings. We pray your will be done in us, all this through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Saturday, October 23

A busy weekend is upon us, O God, and there is excitement in the air. Thank you for the wonderful variety that life brings; for family and friends who share in our laughter and joy; for the ability to enjoy fall weather and outdoor activities; and for the power of your love which overwhelms us. May we be sensitive to those around us who don’t share our joy. May we find ways, Creator God, to open our hearts to them, to befriend them, and, through Jesus the Christ, bring them hope. It is in Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Friday, October 22

O Divine Mystery,

Our human path brings us to various crossroads and often we are uncertain which one to choose. Jesus Christ has given us a model to follow. Strengthen our resolve, O God, that when choices are placed before us we may choose Jesus’ way. The Bible gives us many examples of those who did follow Jesus. We are particularly impacted by the stories of the early church found in the Book of Acts, where Jesus followers were bold in living their faith and inviting others to share with them. May we be so bold. In Jesus name, AMEN.

Yesterday we received the following email from Cindy Carlson:
“Gene is scheduled to be released tomorrow morning. He will be continuing wound care and physical therapy on an outpatient basis for some time, but is getting around now with just a cane most of the time. It’s the witness of all the faithful prayer warriors that he pulled through this and has recovered so well. You can know that they were answered. I want to thank each and every one of the saints that prayed, visited, and sent cards. They all meant so much to both of us. You're all such a blessing to us. God Bless you all, Cindy Carlson”

I received a nice phone call from Joann Hopkins earlier this week. She is recovering from her surgery just fine and thanks the church for our prayers. She did want to clear up a misunderstanding. Some people thought it was Jan Hopkins , Joann’s sister-in-law, who had the surgery. That is incorrect.

This Sunday the Pony Express begins with a Trail Boss Breakfast at 7:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. All Station Agents, Trail Bosses and Pony Express leaders are encouraged to attend.

Please forgive us when we miss the mark and strengthen our resolve to proclaim and live the Good News. In Jesus name, AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Sunday, October 17

O Loving Creator,

In the midst of the noise and hurry of life we pause on this Sabbath day to give you thanks for all our blessings. The world around us is on “full speed”. Slow us down, Lord, and speak to us in the quiet and still moments, calming our hearts. Help us, we pray, to find those times and places where there is a “thinness” between the mortal and the eternal, where there is little that separates us from you. In those times may we feel the embrace of your love. In Jesus name, AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Saturday, October 16

O God of Heaven and Earth,

So often we imagine you to be “out there” somewhere on a golden throne reigning over all your creation. Help us to understand that Jesus showed us you are not “out there” but you are in the midst of us. You “pitched your tent” with us. May we see you in your creation. May we experience you in relationships. May we be drawn to you as we are drawn to those in need. This is our prayer in Jesus name, AMEN.

Willo Clark has forwarded the following message from Nancy Moats about Joann Hopkins:

“Just to let you know that Joann Hopkins had to have a heart valve replacement recently but is doing well. Joe tells me she was moved to a private room on Wednesday. They will probably keep her through Saturday and then if all is going well look at sending her home on Sunday. She is at the brand new Oklahoma Heart Hospital on the south side of Oklahoma City so it is an easy commute for Paul and her family in Norman and Chickasha. If you would like to send her a card, her home address is 5007 Stonehenge Lane, Norman, OK 73026.”

You will remember that Joann and Paul were active members at Central. Paul is a retired Disciples minister. Please keep Joann, Paul and their family in your prayers.

Gene Carlson is in St. Mary’s rehab. There are no new hospital admissions as far as we know. If you hear of someone being hospitalized or sick, please call the church office and let us know. I would rather get 5 calls about the same person, than not know.

We have had two more people sign up to be Hospital Callers. It is a wonderful ministry. If you would like to help by making routine hospital calls one day a week, then call the church office.

Tomorrow is the Lord’s Day. Don Johnson is preaching at 8:00 a.m. and the 10:15 sanctuary service. The youth choir is singing. Tomorrow is my Sunday to be in the Revive and Renew service. Please pray for all our worship experiences at Central, that hearts may be touched and lives changed.

Prayer for Today, Friday, October 15

Gracious Eternal Presence,

We recognize your presence in scripture, in the church’s tradition, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, but you also reveal yourself to us at unexpected times and in unexpected places. There are times when we look into the faces of those around us and see strangers, freeloaders, foreigners, even bums. Of course these are our descriptions. Actually those around us are created in your image, therefore we should see your image in all we meet. Forgive us for our blindness. May we also remember the words of Jesus, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” Empower us to be followers of Jesus. We pray in his name, AMEN.

O Guiding Light,

We watch the TV in amazement as the miners are being rescued from the mine in Chile. The power and fortitude of the human spirit is remarkable and inspiring. We also hear the voices of the miners who firmly believe you were with them during this two month ordeal. We know, O God, that you are not capricious, that all tragedies do not end this successfully, yet we do affirm that you walk with your children, regardless of life’s circumstances. Thank you for the success of this rescue. Please watch over those still underground. May all return safely. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

Our hearts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters at the Christian Church in Hunter which was severely damaged by fire on Sunday evening. I have attached two pictures. Brian Meyer is currently preaching in Hunter at least 2 Sunday’s a month. Don Johnson and Devon McAnally have both served as student ministers there. James B. Carr, Mary Johnson’s father, preached there for at least a summer when Mary was quite small. Carolyn’s sister is an active member there now. I will pass along opportunities to help when the church decides what to do. Right now they are still in shock.

Abe Preston is in Bass Hospital.

Joan Ingmire should be released from St. Mary’s Hospital today.

May we look beyond external appearances into the hearts of those we meet. May we work for justice and peace in all we do. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name, AMEN.

We humbly come to you in prayer. Please forgive us when we act as though our faith is an inconvenience to us or when we act as a faithful follower of Jesus to impress those around us. I received this email from Jana Davis yesterday evening:
John,
Just an update on Mother: She still has wheezing in her lungs, meaning that the pneumonia continues. Dr. Shelton saw her today and said that it would be Mon. at the EARLIEST before she would be released. But she seems to feel well enough, and I think she would enjoy visitors. I'm there as often as I can be, but my work schedule makes it prohibitive for me to be there as much as she'd like!
See you tomorrow, Jana

Please pray for Joan Imgmire, Jana Davis’ mother who is still in St. Mary’s hospital.

See you in church today.

Prayer for Today, Saturday, October 9

O God,

Your heart beckons to our hearts. You desire a relationship with us and yet, in your wisdom, we are free to choose. You do not coerce us. You do not manipulate us. Our freedom limits your control. Yet how else can we bring true praise and thanksgiving to you. You are there, O God, and we have but to turn into your embrace and live showered by your grace. Forgive us when we turn away. Strengthen our resolve to accept your love and grace, thereby being transformed and becoming new creations in Christ Jesus, in whose name we pray. AMEN.

Cindy Carlson sent the following email:

John,
Just thought I'd send you an update on Gene. He is doing very well and continues to get stronger every day. He is working hard at his physical therapy and walks from his room and back to the therapy room with the aid of a walker. He's had a little trouble with nausea, probably due to the oral meds. We both thank everyone for all their prayers and we know that they are responsible for Gene's recovery. Never underestimate the power of the saints prayers. He will be at Northwest Hospital at Bass Pavilion for a while longer, room 4231. Cindy Carlson

May we continue to keep Gene in our prayers.

Please continue to pray for Sandra Justice and her family as they mourn the death of her mother, Hilda Layman.

This evening and tomorrow we gather for worship. May we experience God in these services and may we be empowered to bring others so they might also know God’s love.

The Pony Express is coming. Watch for it.

Grace and peace,

John McLemore

Prayer for Today, Friday, October 8

O Lord our Lord,

How majestic is your name in all the earth. We come before you, dear God, as your grateful children and as brothers and sisters of Christ. Paul tells us that through him we have received a great inheritance. You are our God and we humbly give you thanks. May your Spirit guide us as we seek to be and share the Good News. In Jesus name, Amen.

Please pray for Zander Brown, 10 month old grandson of Sherry Shaw. Zander is hospitalized in Tulsa with breathing problems.

We continue to pray for Steve Henson, Marietta Henson’s son who is at M.D. Anderson.

Margie Edwards, Janet Lohmeyer’s mother, has a recurrence of cancer. Please pray for Margie.

Joan Ingmire is at St. Mary’s with pneumonia. She should be released today of tomorrow.

Please pray for Annella Baker. She had another fainting spell yesterday with at Lifelong Learning.

Below is an email Carolyn sent to family and friends yesterday. With her permission I am forwarding it to the prayer list:

“Just thought you would want to know that we saw the doc today and John's test are right about where they were previously so that's good news. We will keep our Nov. 9 appt. in Dallas and get started in the trial. If that isn't working (they should be able to tell pretty quickly), they will pull him out and put him on a new drug that is similar in nature but is just now coming out.

The Provenge is still a wait-for-inclusion-in- the-program-"thing". John is enrolled in that program but has to wait til there is an opening. But, he's not losing weight (good and bad! grin ), has good energy and all that other good stuff so he's definitely holding his own.

The Enid doc who relayed this info to us today said the same thing the Baylor doc said - that people live with these bone lesions (he has 2) and lymph nodes (a small amount) for years. It's good to have confirmation of this from 2 different docs.

So, we are much, much, much more hopeful than we were after the time we went to Oklahoma City. We have hope founded in reality and not just wishful thinking.

We know that you are praying for us and we appreciate it so much. (I, personally, need to thank you for the special care you have given me in checking on me and making sure I'm not alone. - Thank you, Sharon, especially.) You are all lovely friends and no one could do better in that department. In fact, in times like this, we know how truly family we are. We really ARE brothers and sisters in Christ. God's blessings to us are immense anyway, and now we have this wonderfully made blessing of your deep love and care for us. We love all of you.

If I have left anyone out of the email that you can think of, please send me email addies or forward this on. I tried to cover as many bases as possible, but there are some whose addies I don't have that I'd like to write to.

We will keep you updated. Blessed be, Carolyn McLemore”

IT IS A BEAUTIFUL DAY. LET US REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT!

Grace and peace,

John McLemore

Prayer for Today, Thursday, October 7

O God,

There is an emptiness within us that only you can fill. Many of us attempt to stuff that void with things, busyness, addictions, and inflated egos. Forgive us, O God. Help us to realize you are there with your wasteful and extravagant love, waiting for us to turn into your embrace. May we strip away our efforts to be whole and step into the abundance of your life affirming, life giving, life filling grace. You complete us and we give you thanks. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Wednesday, October 6

O Great “I AM”,

The Bible gives us many images and names for you, some more appealing than others. Your children have longed for your embrace since the beginning of time and have interpreted your presence in a variety of ways, based on their circumstances. We are no different. Forgive us when we try to define you or limit you to our ability to understanding. May we be receptive to you, O God, and may the power of your grace flow over us. Rather than defining you, may we experience you. We open our hearts to you this day. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

We thank you for all the blessings we have received. In the midst of these blessings we are aware of the times we have not been thankful, the times when we have turned away from you and from our brothers and sisters in need. Prayer for Today, Monday, October 4

O Divine Mystery,

We thank you for the church, the living Body of Christ in the world. It has survived for 2,000 years because your Spirit is there, even in the midst of its dark times. Bring the church into the future you will for it, O God. Today we thank you specifically for Central Christian Church. In these uncertain days may members be identified and equipped to lead this community of faith into the world as the hands and feet of Jesus. May we be bold. May we be courageous. May we be faithful. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Sunday, October 3

O God,

On this World Communion Sunday help us to recognize and embrace our global citizenship. Jesus says in the Gospel of John that you loved the world so much you sent your only Son. May we be joined today with our Christian brothers and sisters in all the places of the globe as we share the loaf and cup of the Eucharist. And may we be and share the Good News with all those created in your image. In Jesus name, AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Saturday, October 2

Patient God,

Sometimes the events of life take us to unfamiliar places. Nothing looks right. We seem lost and can’t get our bearings. Help us to remember that Jesus is our polar star. As we focus on his life and ministry we become reoriented toward you. Even in dark days and stormy seas, you are there. May our trust sustain us during the upheavals of life. We thank you for the embrace of your everlasting arms. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Friday, October 1

Eternal God,

We come before you this morning with thanksgiving in our hearts. We are so blessed. Some in our midst are grieving, may we provide comfort and support. Some in our midst are sick, may we surround them with our care. Some in our midst are despairing, may our love encourage them. Help us to be honest and trustworthy in our relationships with others and with you. Sometimes, O God, we are the ones grieving, sick or despairing and we don’t feel blessed. Help us to know you are alongside us, regardless of life’s circumstances and regardless of how we feel about you. We give you thanks, AMEN.
