Prayer for Today, Sunday, October 9

Sovereign God,

We open our hearts to You. May Your grace and peace fill us to overflowing. O Lord, You are generous beyond our comprehension.  Please forgive us when we take our blessings for granted. May our words and actions be vehicles of praise and thanksgiving. Work through us, Loving God, so that Your will may be done in our lives and in the world. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Please make an effort to greet and welcome our members and guests in Sunday School and Church today.

May God bless us as we move from a culture of fund raising to a culture of generosity.

The scripture for today is 1 Timothy 6:1-10:
Let all who are under the yoke of slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be blasphemed. 2Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful to them on the ground that they are members of the church; rather they must serve them all the more, since those who benefit by their service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these duties. 3Whoever teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that is in accordance with godliness, 4is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid craving for controversy and for disputes about words. From these come envy, dissension, slander, base suspicions, 5and wrangling among those who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.
6Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; 7for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it; 8but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. 9But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.
The Psalm for this week is Psalm 128:
Happy is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways. 2You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be happy, and it shall go well with you. 3Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. 4Thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord. 5The Lord bless you from Zion. May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. 6May you see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel!

Grace and peace,

John McLemore
