Empowering God,
Today we pray for the church. We know, O Lord, it is the vehicle that carries the faith from one generation to the next. We also know it can have an ugly underbelly. We are the church of today. Please forgive us, Loving God, when our prejudices and closed minded views limit the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ on earth. May we be as welcoming as Jesus, who reached beyond the limits of religious conformity and cared for those in need. We pray this prayer in His name. AMEN.

Last Tuesday the following press release was posted on the Global Ministries website:
The leaders of the Community of the Disciples of Christ in Congo have informed the Africa office of an outbreak of malaria in Monieka. Over 1200 cases have been documented and 406 deaths (2/3 of which were children) have been recorded. The majority of the deaths have occurred in families who are connected to the Disciples. There are also milder malaria outbreaks in Mbandaka, Bolenge and Ikengo at this time.
The church asks for our prayers for the grieving families, the sick and the medical personnel who are treating them. The leadership of the Disciples in the Congo are planning a trip to comfort and encourage the community in Monieka. Thanks for standing with our brothers and sisters in prayer during this difficult time.
Global Ministries is in the process of responding to this crisis financially along with German partners of the Disciples in the Congo.
We will be receiving a special offering this Sunday to help supply medications, netting, and transportation. Global Ministries will wire are the money to the Congo as soon as it is received. This is an urgent request. Please respond generously. Please note "Congo Disaster" on your check or offering envelope.
