Prayer for Today, Friday, August 31

Gracious Lord,

Sometimes we examine our situation in life and we become despairing. Then we look around and see conditions in which others find themselves and our maladies don’t seem so bad. Please forgive our self-centeredness, loving God. Help us to be glass half full people. May we rejoice in the positive aspects of our lives, the blessings, and the joy. May we seek to reach out to others as agents of hope and comfort. We celebrate the paradox of the Christian faith – we are blessed as we seek to bless others. For all things we give Your thanks. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

May we use all our gifts and abilities to make the right choices. This we pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Sunday, August 26

Holy One,

We yearn for those mountaintop experiences where our vision is unimpeded, our minds are clear, and our hearts are filled with hope and joy. This is when everything makes sense and we feel close to You, but such moments are fleeting, at best. Most of the time we experience the more mundane aspects of our mortal journeys. Thank You, O Lord, for those brief moments that bring us joy and glimpses of Your glory. They give us the strength to live everyday with courage and expectancy. We give You thanks and praise in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Friday, August 24

Creator God,

Jesus said, “‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 NRSV) May we hear Jesus words and take them to heart, O God. Sometimes our burdens seem overwhelming. Sometimes they are non-existent. Whatever the case, we surrender our cares and concerns to You. Help us to open our hearts to the spirit of the Christ who heals our wounds and makes us whole. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Thursday, August 23

Eternal Love,

Your spirit moves among us as a nurturing, inviting, prodding, encouraging, and sustaining presence. We like the comfortable places of our lives, yet Your spirit unsettles us. Our encounters with the Holy change things. No longer can we rely on those easy ways of the past. You push us into uncharted waters, yet we are comforted and nurtured by Your grace and we are enabled to meet the challenges that are before us. Faith must always be dynamic. Static faith is dead faith. Keep prodding us, O Lord. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

Thank you again for your kind words and prayers.

Prayer for Today, Sunday, August 19, 2012

Today is the day we assemble to bring our worship to You. It is the most important act of the faithful. You call to us. You learn toward us, and we are invited to respond with our presence, our praise, and our prayers. Everything else we do as a church is defined by our worship. Please forgive our skewed priorities. Please forgive our misplaced loyalties. Be present to us this day as we worship You. May we do so in spirit and in truth. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Saturday, August 18

God Who is Faithful,

In our history, O Lord, You have continually reached out to Your people. You establish a covenant relationship. The people fall away. You reach out again and the people continue to fall away. We don’t understand why You keep trying, yet You do. We feel so unworthy, as a people and as individuals. Help us to realize that there is an emptiness in us that only You can fill. We are incomplete until we turn into Your embrace. Your grace overcomes all our flaws and sin. We stand amazed, but we are thankful. May we be faithful to You in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Friday, August 17

Eternal Presence,

You are our help is ages past and our hope for years to come. We give You thanks for the wonder and mystery of Your grace in our lives that gives us hope and the promise of peace. Often we are overwhelmed by the divisions we experience in the human family. Politics, economics, ethnicity, and religion often drive people apart. May our faith inform and sustain us in such times. The prophet Isaiah spoke for You when he said, “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples”. Forgive us, Loving God, when we focus on that which separates us. May our faith be the motivation to find common ground with our brothers and sisters around the world. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Thursday, August 16

Holy One,

Priorities are easily set and difficult to honor because there are so many influences competing for our time, talents and resources. We want to spend time with families, but everyone has busy schedules, even our children and youth. We want to help in civic organizations, yet the pace of our work limits our involvement. We want to serve You, O Lord, yet often we even move You down the list. Please forgive our foolish ways, we pray. May we be bold and courageous, holding fast to our desire to serve You and others in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Our church family has been impacted these last few days by the demise of a number of dear and faithful members and friends. We pray for their families, their friends, and our entire faith community. Prayer for Today, Sunday, August 12

God of Love,

We use the word “love” so frequently it often loses its meaning. Please forgive us, Generous God, for allowing such a concept to become flat and colorless. Your love overwhelms us. Christ’s love on the cross empowers us. The love of family and friends encourages us. True love is anything but dull and lifeless. It is a simple and overused word, yet it conveys the very essence of our relationship with You and others and we are grateful. We offer this prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

-----

Loving God,

We take so many of our blessings for granted. The cool morning breeze reminds us that life is not always the same, that changes do come, often revitalizing us. Thank You, Gracious God. Today we thank You for all our blessings. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

May the light of Your grace illumine our hearts this day. May Your presence cleanse us and free us from the base elements of our nature. Prayer for Today, Thursday, August 9

Creator God,

We see your handiwork all around us and we sing praises to You. Unfortunately, in our self-absorbed, fast-paced world we often rush past the beauty that is there. Our focus is on the next meeting, the next appointment, the next stop on the journey, the items we need at the store, or the next program on television. Please forgive us, Loving God, and help us to slow down. May we take Holy Pauses through this day. May we look around. May we rejoice in the beauty and wonder that is all about and may we give You thanks. We offer this prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.
______

Vena Poore’s funeral is this morning at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel. Please pray for her family and friends.

Jay Russell (Dee Smith’s son), John Ireland and Sophia Farmer are all hospitalized. Please pray for them.

June Frei is recovering from a broken arm. Please pray for June.

Another need has been brought to my attention. We have a member who is diabetic. She normally gets her insulin through an agency here in Enid, but they have not responded to two recent requests. Her doctor sent her to the free clinic which is normally open every Tuesday evening. Unfortunately they are on a summer schedule and are open every other week. Last Tuesday they were closed and she was out of her medication. Rick Hill graciously filled the prescription for her because she was rapidly moving into a desperate situation. The cost was over $250.00 because she has no insurance. I authorized Rick to bill the church. Would you, your Sunday School class, or small group consider helping defray that cost?  It seems there is so much need. I know God doesn’t ask us to do everything, but God does ask us to do something. Thank you for your consideration.

Grace and peace,

John McLemore

This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Tuesday, August 7

Loving God,

We live in a time when people hold strongly opposing views on a variety of subjects. There is so much division and we experience it even in the church. Please forgive our bickering. As people of faith may we focus on those understandings that bring us together rather than pull us apart. Help us to realize we can have strongly differing opinions. We can discuss them, and in the end, we can love one another, even as we disagree. May the bond that holds us together, Jesus Christ or Lord, sustain us and make us one. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

Today was a bad day for me and it was right on schedule, just like last time. I pray that tomorrow will be a little better, and it should be.

Prayer for Today, Monday, August 6

O Holy One,

You are near to us as our next breath. Our heart beats in rhythm with Yours, yet there are times when we feel isolated and alone. We sometimes feel there is no one who understands us, or cares for us, or appreciates what we do. Please forgive us, Loving God, for our self centeredness. May we know that we are understood when we seek to understand others. We experience caring as we care. We feel appreciated when we express appreciation to others. We know Your love and feel Your eternal presence when we actively love others, particularly the widow, orphan and resident alien. You are as near to us as the next breath, but it is when we give to others that we actually experience Your presence. Bless us now we pray. In Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Our hearts go out to all those affected by the wildfires. Please watch over them, O Lord, as well as the firefighters and volunteers who are there to help. You are always with us. May Your presence bring comfort to those who have lost so much. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Today is the day the Lord has made. May we gather to rejoice and sing praises to God.

Please pray for our church as we seek to invite and welcome. May God be with us as we make disciples who make disciples.

Grace and peace,

Prayer for Today, Saturday, August 4

Holy Presence,

We yearn for encounters with You, Loving God. Sometimes they occur as we embrace the beauty of creation; sometimes in our study of scripture and the tradition; sometimes in the depths of our relationships with family and friends; sometimes as we reach out to those in need; sometimes in our worship. Music, prayers, and meditation often take us to places we cannot reach on our own, where the mystery of eternity and the reality of our lives is separated only by a thin veil. We seek those moments, O Lord. We yearn to feel Your holy touch. Today we open ourselves to You. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

Our beloved Vela McGugin died yesterday. Her service will likely be on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel. I will announce a definite time tomorrow when it has been finalized. Please pray for her son, Pat, and all of her family.

I received the following email from Tim McAnally:
“John,

Please add Max & Barbara Thomas of Ninnakah to the Prayer list. They are my sister in laws parents. Their farm home burned to the ground yesterday. They are in there late 80s and early 90s.”

Please pray for the Thomas family and all those impacted by the heat, wind, and fires. May God watch over the brave firefighters and all those whose homes have been destroyed.

Tomorrow is the Lord’s Day. Please honor God with your presence in worship. We are doing another infant dedication in the 10:15 a.m. traditional service. Brian Meyer begins his tenure as the main preacher in the R & R service. It will be a great day!

Grace and peace,

Prayer for Today, Friday, August 3

Author of Love,

We are able to love because You first loved us. We are able to compassionately respond to human need because you planted the seed of compassion within us. We see and appreciate beauty because Your spirit empowers us to open our eyes and see. Please forgive us, O Lord, when we hate, close our hearts to need, and see only the ugly parts of human existence. May the light that Jesus brought to a world of darkness shine through us. May our witness influence others, not to avoid the distasteful and unpleasant, but to transform them into love, compassion, and beauty. This we pray in Jesus name, AMEN.

I received the following email from Suzanne Klemme yesterday:  “New grandbaby born today! Kylee Lynn Klemme. 8:23 am, 8 lbs 14 oz, 20". She and Lindsey are doing great and the other kids love her!”

Congratulations to Bret and Lindsey, the proud parents, to Mike and Suzanne Klemme, the proud grandparents, and to Bob Klemme, Worth and Dorothy Bracher, the proud great grandparents.

Brain Meyer serves his first Sunday as the main preacher and “point” person in R & R this Sunday. The service is providing a meaningful worship experience for a number of new and old members and visitors. Brian, James Phillips, the band and others are committed to growing this service. Please support their efforts with your prayers, attendance and by inviting others to join us.

My third chemo was yesterday. So far so good. Likely the challenging days will come during the first part of the week.

Grace and peace,
