Prayer for Today, Saturday, March 31

God of Blessings,

The beauty of your creation overwhelms us. We stand in awe as we observe magnificent sunrises and sunsets; the mountain peaks and vast plains; the seashores and deserts; all remind us that we are abundantly blessed. Please forgive us, Loving God, when we are too busy to appreciate all that we have. Empower us, we pray, so that we might open our eyes and embrace Your gifts to us. May we have thankful hearts and generous spirits, sharing our blessings with others. This we pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Friday, March 30

O Divine Presence,

You are as near to us as our next breath and your eternal presence sustains us. We give You thanks. Even though you are near, forgive us when we take that nearness for granted. Please forgive us, we pray, when we come to you casually and as a matter of convenience. Help us to realize, O Lord, that our relationship takes work on our part. You ask us to be disciplined in our prayers, in our devotion, in our worship, and in our service. We humble ourselves before You seeking forgiveness and asking for guidance. Please hear our prayer. In Jesus' name. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Thursday, March 29

God of All Seasons,

Springtime is exploding in our midst. The air is warm. The redbuds are blossoming. Plants are pushing their way through the earth toward the sunlight. This is a time of new birth and we give You thanks. We are on the cusp of Palm Sunday and the beginning of the most significant week in Christianity. Please forgive us, Gracious God, when we lack faithfulness. Bless us, we pray, as we reflect on the last days of Jesus life before his crucifixion and resurrection. Spring is a time to appreciate new life. Easter is a time to celebrate rebirth. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

I received the following e-mail from Fig Newton: John,
I got a call from Kelly my daughter last night with some disturbing news.  My son-in-laws Uncle Jeff is in critical condition in a Kansas City hospital with a very bad heart condition.  He is scheduled for bypass surgery next week, and they hope he will make it that far.  Additionally an older sister of one of my granddaughter’s team mates on her soccer team has been missing for five days now.  The Bowen family in Mustang really needs our prayers for their daughter.  Thanks to all of our church family as I know you will all be praying for both of these situations.  Fig

Intruding God,

There is a sameness to life, O God, that comforts us in a rapidly changing world. Sometimes, however, that sameness dulls our spirits and limits our vision. We seek comfort, Loving God. Please forgive us, we pray, when that need restrains us from following Your son, Jesus. May Your spirit guide us, even when it moves us out of our normal routine and into the unknown. We trust in You, O God. May we be your faithful servants. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

Loving God,

We are blessed by friendships, new and old. We are nurtured by deep and lasting relationships. We are invigorated by meeting and knowing new people. Bless us we pray, O Lord, as we share life and faith with others. Encourage us as we share the variety of life’s experiences, both on the mountain tops and the valleys. May we be open and honest with each other. May we be forgiving and encouraging, all in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

This is the last day of work for the Joplin Mission Trip. It has still rained every day, but our group has been doing good work inside buildings. Yesterday some were “taping and mudding” drywall in a restored home. Some were removing old beds and then assembling new beds with new mattresses in a women’s shelter. The last group worked all day at a distribution center. The groups have work to do all day today as well. All in all, the trip has been a great success. Carolyn and I are returning to Enid today. The rest will come back tomorrow.

Prayer for Today, Thursday, March 22

Eternal Mystery,

You seek us and we endeavor to respond. You love us and we attempt to love You. Your presence brings us comfort and we try to comfort others. Often times, O Lord, we fail. We want to be responsive to You, but our own needs and the trials of the world lead us elsewhere. As we continue our Lenten journey, we confess all before You. We stand in Your presence as incomplete and sinful people. May we repent. May we turn around. May we respond to Your love by honoring You with our devotion and service. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

The Easter Egg Hunt is a little over two weeks away and we need candy for the eggs. Please bring your offering of candy to the church and put it in front of Sally’s office.

The Joplin Mission trip is going well. The constant rain has hampered outside activities, but our group has stayed busy working in a variety of places. Today they are assembling bunk beds and hanging dry wall. Last night the South Joplin Christian Church people fed us. We also heard from a 92 year old member of the church who survived the tornado even though her house was destroyed. Please continue to pray for our workers and the residents of Joplin.

Dear God,

We sometimes struggle to make sense out of the trials of life. While we would like circumstances to be normal and predictable, they are not. Sickness, death, destruction, and hardships challenge us. Sometimes we even question Your providence, O Lord. Please forgive us, we pray. May we be like the Psalmist, who after the lament say, “Still will I trust in You”. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN

A REPORT FROM JOPLIN

I am writing this article from the Mission Station in Joplin. Our group is doing quite well, but we have really been hampered by the steady rain. So many jobs were outside and now we are limited to “inside” work. It is Spring Break with hundreds of college and high school students here to help, so our crew is working part days at best, with a couple of exceptions. That being said, everyone is glad to be here. The destruction is still so obvious, even ten months after the devastating tornado. It is overwhelming at times.

We are sharing accommodations and work assignments with the campus minister (a Disciple) and a number of students from Kansas State University. They are all now new friends.

The church here is amazing. The building was built in the early 1900’s. They had a flood in the basement a couple of years ago and had totally remodeled the area, using a lot of church volunteer labor. The tornado ripped off most of the roof, but the basement was not impacted. Now they have totally remodeled the interior of the building. It is well marked with good interior signage and has a very welcoming ambience. The people are exceptionally accommodating and are even fixing our supper this evening. The Mission Station is in an old Quonset hut. Earlier mission teams have totally redone the inside to accommodate 36 people with bunks, showers, and dining facilities. We are the first group to use it and workmen are still coming in every day to finish projects. Week of Compassion money, along with other donations, funded the overhaul. The Church is committed to maintaining the purpose of the Mission Station for five years. Right now groups are scheduled every week until October.

Thank you for all your support. We are attempting to be good representatives of Central Christian Church. I am so proud of our volunteers. You should be too.

Grace and peace,

John McLemore

Prayer for Today, Tuesday, March 20

O Lord, Our Lord,

The journey to Jerusalem with Jesus is difficult. We know that Jesus faced the specter of the cross, but he transformed it into a symbol of abundant and eternal life. We are told to take up our crosses and follow him. We like to think we are followers, but we struggle with cross bearing. Please forgive us, gracious God. The path to abundant life is difficult and calls for sacrifice. We prefer the gain, but not the pain. We confess our reluctance. Please empower us with Your Spirit of grace. May we find strength for the journey. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.
