Prayer for Today, Sunday, June 30

Divine Presence,

Many times the actions of our faith only focus on our relationship with You. We seek to block out everything else and live only in Your presence. Unfortunately, while crucially important, this is only part of faithful living. Please forgive us for being so shortsighted. Help us to realize that faith in You is best expressed as we live in relationship with others. We love You, O God, and that love grows as we share it with those around us. Forgive us, we pray, when we avoid the needs and joys of those around us. May we experience You as we extend compassion, grace, and peace to those we meet. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Gracious God,

We thank You for Jesus and his example of how to live our lives. He included the vulnerable on the margins of society. He  had special words for the broken-hearted. He comforted those searching for peace, and he gave hope to those in desperate situations. Strengthen us in our weakness, we pray, so that our lives may model his. This is our prayer in his name. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Monday, June 24

Loving God,

Life’s troubles are like clouds that block the sun’s rays. There is unexpected darkness and our view of the heavens is obscured, but, like the clouds, gentle breezes blow them away and, once again, our troubles are lessened by the warmth of Your grace. We can see beyond our present circumstance and we can know that, eventually, Your spirit, like the sun, breaks through. Come into our lives, we pray. Shine the light of Your love into the dark recesses of our souls. Cleanse us and send us forth, even into the storms, as Your faithful and loving servants, bolstered by Your amazing grace. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Sunday, June 23

Eternal Spirit,

Tradition tells us Your breath separated the land from the waters at creation. Your breath entered the nostrils of the first human and gave life. The Risen Lord breathed on his disciples and they were transformed into bold and courageous followers who proclaimed the Good News. Breathe on us, we pray. May the concerns of everyday living be whisked away. May the spark that is within us burst into all consuming flame. Breathe on us, we pray. May our priorities be turned upside down and may the Christ live within us. Breathe on us, we pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

_______

Prayer for Today, Saturday, June 22

Gracious God,

We often wonder about Your judgment. We know that Jesus took on the sins of the world, those past and those to come. It is still, however, a great mystery to us. Part of scripture suggests Your love precedes everything, that Your love and grace is not dependent on our actions. Sometimes we think we need to earn those gifts. Help us, Loving God, to realize that transformation comes to us when we accept Your ever-present love, when we accept Your grace. Then we desire to live differently. May we not turn away from You. May our thoughts and actions please You. May our lives be lived so that Your love for all is seen in us. Your judgment is still a mystery to us. May we know Your forgiveness and may we turn into Your embrace. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Gracious God,

On this Lord’s Day we come before You, humbly asking that You forgive our inattention to You. We allow so many things and activities to get in the way of our worship of You and our service to others. May we move from talking about Your love and seek to embody Your love. Use us, O Lord. Fill us with Your spirit and empower us to live the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is in his name we pray. AMEN.
