Prayer for Today, Tuesday, December 31

Most Holy God,

 

Today we reflect on the year now coming to a close. We celebrate the new births among our families and friends. We mourn the passing of loved ones. We think about the new friendships that have developed. We celebrate the new baptisms and new members who are now a part of our church family. We remember those moments of celebration and those times of sorrow. We pray, O Lord that our words and deeds in 2013 have honored You. Please forgive us when we missed the mark. As we look ahead to 2014, we pray for peace and love to prevail. May we be passionate about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and seek to be witnesses to those we meet. We dedicate ourselves to Your service. Sustain us, we pray, with Your ever-present spirit. This we pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

We are doing NEW YEAR’S IN RIO! It will be from 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. this evening. Tell your friends. We will have a wonderful time with activities for all ages. Admission is a can of food for Horn of Plenty.

 

The funeral for Mae Clark will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel. There will be a family meal at 12:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Please pray for Mae’s family and friends.

Byron Whetstone, Jim and Janet Cox’s son-in-law, is back in his home.  Please pray for Byron.

 

We have been asked to pray for the family Caleb DeVries and the community of Lamont. Caleb was 8 years old. He contracted strep throat and an ear infection. It went to his brain and he passed away.

 

This Sunday, January 5, we will undecorated the church IMMEDIATELY AFTER the 10:15 a.m. services. We will take down all the decorations and store them in their appropriate places. If a number of people can stay we should be done in less than 45 minutes and still have time to go to lunch or watch football.

Loving God,

 

This day, O Lord,  we would live our lives for You, please help us move our dreams to reality. This day we would like to share Your grace with others, please help us to walk closely with You. This day we would like to inspire hope, please help us to trust in Your promises. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Sunday, December 29

Loving God,

 

Today we pray for the varied ministries of our congregation. We thank you for those dedicated members and friends who volunteer to teach, make hospital calls, care for the grieving, contact shut-ins and homebound, repair broken items around the building, balance the books, and all of the other functions that make us who we are. As we look to a New Year may we each consider what roles we will play in being the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. We are so blessed. May Your blessings flow through us to others. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

I received word last night that our beloved Mae Clark died. I will meet with the family at 1:00 p.m. today. Please pray for Mae’s family and friends.

We seek to reach out in mission to make a difference in Your world. Sometimes what we can do for You seems insignificant. Help us to recognize that every time we help a person to feel wanted, we share Your love; every time we speak of our faith, we share a little of You; and every time we work together to meet the needs of others, we serve You. Please bless the work we do. Empower us to always seek to do more in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Lord of Hosts,

 

As we move toward the end of 2013 we reflect on the events that have occurred. Decisions were made. Laughter and tears were shared. We had times of success and times of failure. In all things, however, we give You thanks and praise. Please bless us as we move toward the next year. May it be a time of faith sharing and compassion. May 2014 provide opportunities to reach out and grow our faith community, all to honor You. We offer our hands and feet, our hearts, and our minds to Your service in Jesus name. AMEN.

O Divine Presence,

 

We are filled with the holiday spirit even though the presents are opened and many have returned to their homes. May we still sing carols and ponder the mystery of Your eternal love. Please bless us, loving God, as we move through the twelve days of Christmas. We open our hearts to the power of the Christ in our midst. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Holy God,

 

How can we respond to Your love? As we finish our Christmas preparations may we take a few moments to reflect on the message of this season. You intruded into human history in the revelation of Jesus the Christ. Your grace is overflowing. May our response be in our living as we seek to share the Good News in our words and in our actions. May we be swept up in the power, beauty, and mystery that is all around us. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Monday, December 23

Gracious God,

 

Today we have visions of shepherds, wisemen, and a manger. The heavens burst forth in praise all those years ago, may that be so today, tomorrow, and Christmas Day. Stir us, O Lord. May our hearts be filled to overflowing as we reflect on the Word becoming flesh and dwelling among us. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Iretta Terrel had a massive hemorrhagic stroke yesterday around 5:00 P.M. She is Bass Hospital Room 307 surrounded by her daughter and niece. The doctors don’t expect to live very long. Please pray for Iretta and her family.

 

The weather affected church attendance yesterday morning, but the musical program last night was well attended. Thanks to all who made it a success.

Prayer for Today, Sunday, December 22

God of Life,

 

Today we seek a sacred space. Some will find such a place at church in the sanctuary, chapel, or in the classroom where life, faith, and love are shared. Others will find it in their home as they read, meditate, and pray. Wherever we are, O God, may we find that place where there is less distance between humanity and the Divine. The spirit moves among us and removes the barriers that we artificially set between us. As we honor You with our time and devotion, may Your love break through and may we see a glimpse of Your eternal reign. We offer this prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Empowering God,

 

Your love is as expansive as the sky and as small as the cracks in our heart. May these last few days of Advent provide opportunities for pray, meditation, and reflection on the mystery and power of the Nativity. We offer our hearts to you as we prepare to celebrate Christmas. Stir us, O Lord, with the power of Your spirit. May Your love flow through us to others in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

O God,

 

We thank You for all the members of our church. We appreciate the wisdom of age and the enthusiasm of youth. We thank You for those deeply rooted in the tradition of Central Christian Church and for those who have new ideas. May everyone feel welcome and may they know that their contributions are valued. Help us, O Lord, to realize that we are all ministers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We pay staff to facilitate that ministry, but we all have jobs to do in teaching, evangelism, nurturing, and management. May Your will for our church be accomplished through us as we work and serve together. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Gracious God,

 

We know You are with us as we travel life’s road and we give You thanks. There are times when we do encounter You in unexpected places. It could be when the stranger asks for help. It could be when a child asks a profound question. It could be in that moment when we are overwhelmed by the beauty around us. It could also be as we hold the hand of a dying loved one. Help us, O Lord, to open our eyes and our hearts to You. Bless us, we pray, as we seek to bless others. We offer this prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Lana Ellis’ brother, John David Stephens, died on Tuesday. His services are pending with Stitsworth Funeral Home. Please pray for his family.

 

Byron Whetstone, son-in-law of the Coxes, is in intensive care after his surgery yesterday in St. Louis. Please surround Byron with your prayers.

This Sunday evening our Chancel Choir and Mixed Company will present a Christmas musical program in the Sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. Plan to attend and bring a friend. It will be amazing.

Prayer for Today, Wednesday, December 18

Most Holy God,

 

The path of life has many forks in the road. Some decisions are easy to make, others less so. We try to be faithful and wise in the directions we choose, but there are times when we intentionally choose the wrong path. Once we have gone so far, it is difficult to turn around. It could be in relationships, in the choice of activities, even in the way we manage our financial affairs. When we reach those points we pray for forgiveness, O Lord. It is difficult to change, but true and lasting grace comes from You. May we have the courage to correct our bad choices. May Your spirit guide us down the path of recovery. May our new life in Christ be a blessing to others. This is our prayer in Jesus’ name. AMEN.
