Prayer for Today, Tuesday, May 27

O Loving God,

We know how we feel in our hearts, yet our actions often betray us. We seek to be loving, kind and encouraging, but our interactions with others are impacted by tight schedules, confrontations and competing voices that seek our attention. May others forgive us as we seek to make amends. May You forgive us, Dear Lord, when we allow the pressures of life to smother our loving responses to You and to others. Today, may we take deep breathes that help to calm our spirits and clear the clutter from our lives. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

JOYS AND CONCERNS

We continue to lift up Cyrilla Mette.

Jerry Long is recovering from knee replacement surgery.

We lift up Rev. Allen Nagel’s (UMC Methodist minister in Lamont) 30 year old son, Jason, who lives in Denver.

Rev Dick Duckworth has been released from St. Mary’s

I am having back surgery tomorrow. I have some vertebrae now involved with the prostate cancer. In the L5 the tumor is pressing against a nerve that is causing severe back and leg pain for the last couple of weeks. Dr. Pollard will go in and removed as much of the tumor as possible to relieve the pressure to the nerve. This isn’t a cure. I will have to chemo or radiation later. I will be in the hospital for 3 days and then recuperating at home for a few days.

You will remember when I had knee replacement surgery I asked for prayers but no visits. The same is true now. Please pray, but don’t come to the hospital. When I am sick or hurting I just want to be left alone.

I am optimistic about the outcome and the prognosis, but I will say again, your prayers will be greatly appreciated.

These daily prayers might be sporadic for the next few days.

Prayer for Today, Sunday, May 25

Divine Love,

You are the God of all creation. You watch over us, care for us, sustain us with Your Presence and encourage us with the many ways You are revealed to us. We see You in the beauty of the world, because You have given us the ability to observe and reflect. We see You in scripture, the sacred texts which have come to us through time. We see You in the great tradition of the church. While many interpretations are different, tradition is one of the vehicles for Your revelation to all generations. And, O God, we see You in the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Forgive us, Loving God, when we squabble over our different understandings of You. May we come to know and experience You in all Your mystery and glory. It is in Jesus’ name we pray, AMEN.

PSALM FOR TODAY

Psalm 95

1O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

2Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

3For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

4In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.

5The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed.

6O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!

7For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. O that today you would listen to his voice!

Prayer for Today, Friday, May 23

O Divine Presence,

We believe, please forgive our unbelief. There are times when we are unable to reconcile our understanding that You are a loving and gracious God in the midst of the horror and tragedies of life. Natural disasters, crippling disease, the death of those still young. . .none of it makes sense to us. In the midst of the doubt and the pain we hear, continually, the words of the lamenting psalmist, “But still will I trust in You”. Help us to realize, Loving God, that You are not the cause of bad things and, amazingly, You walk with us through the experiences. May we know that our tears and pain cause tears to stream down Your face. In the depths, in the sorrow, in the grief, and in the pain, You are there. You surround us with Your everlasting arms and You empower new life to rise from of the ashes. We trust in You. In Jesus name we pray. AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Wednesday, May 21

O Love That Will Not Let Us Go,

You surround us with Your tender mercies and we give You thanks. Today we reflect on those who were pillars of faith upon whose shoulders we figuratively stand: those in our family, those in our church, former ministers, youth ministers, elders, teachers and friends. We do not come to this day solely by our own efforts. We are in relationship with You, O God, because others showed us Your Love, others introduced us to an understanding of Your grace, others taught us the Bible passages, and others modeled the Christ-like life. Now, Dear God, the responsibility is ours. May the sacrificial efforts of our mentors be lived out in us. May we seek to influence and lift up those who are following. We live in changing times, but, with Your guidance, we are equal to the task. Give us strength and courage as we pass the torch of faith to new generations. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

Creator of All That Is,

You have blessed us with the bounty of Your hands and have called us to be good stewards. Help us to understand, O Lord, that we are caretakers, not owners. We are caretakers of the earth, of resources, even of the talents and abilities you have gifted us. May we take these responsibilities to heart, being wise in our choices and generous in our actions. May we do deeds today, for others and for your creation, that will please You, O Lord. Empower us to act in Jesus name, AMEN.

Prayer for Today, Monday, May 19

Gracious God,

You have placed with us a yearning to be in relationship with You. There is an emptiness only You can fill, yet we often attempt to be completed by consumption, seeking power and influence, or acquisitiveness. All our attempts are empty and vain. Forgive us, O God. May we turn to You, knowing You are always there. Our decision must be to open our hearts to the power and mystery of Your grace, then we are filled to overflowing. Grant us the courage to live as You call us to live, loving You and loving our neighbor. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.

O Divine Mercy,

We live in a world that places so much emphasis on cures and much less emphasis on healing. We thank You, Loving God, for the amazing advances in medicine and the wonderful gifts shared by physicians that allow us to be cured of so many diseases and maladies. We pray also for healing, healing of body, but also mind and spirit. You are the source of true healing. May Your Spirit flow through us and bring us to an understand that we must depend on You. Attune our minds and spirits to Your grace and ever-present love. We pray for wholeness, physically, spiritually, mentally and emotionally, for ourselves and those near to us. Bring healing, O Lord.
